If you’ve never been to Universal CityWalk Hollywood it’s located at Universal Studios and is a whimsical entertainment center with restaurants, IMAX movie theater, shops, and quirky attractions.
Universal City Walk sits on a hill above the movie studio. You can either park in one of the massive parking structures on top, or take the LA Metro at Universal Station and jump on a studio tram that will take you to where you can take a tour of Universal Studios Hollywood or enjoy a stroll through CityWalk.
Eat your heart out and have fun
I love to walk around to see the brightly colored neon-lit signs, kitschy storefronts, kids running gleefully through the floor fountains, and people flying through the air in the indoor skydiving tube. Food is everywhere from the Hard Rock Café, to Bubba Gump Shrimp, Wolfgang Puck Bistro, Buca Di Beppo, and more. There’s something for everyone from California Cuisine to junk food. Ben and Jerry’s sports a pink convertible sticking out of the wall above the entrance, The Hard Rock Cafe (sadly no longer there as of 2020) butts up next to a giant Van Halen Guitar that towers over the restaurant. Voodoo Doughnut is a sugar junkie’s paradise and so is It’s Sugar. For the healthy-minded, you can juice yourself silly under the giant neon fruit of Jamba Juice.

CityWalk is easily accessible from the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City Hotel and the Sheraton Universal Hotel where you can take the shuttle to CityWalk and the Universal Studios Tour. Both hotels, as well as The Globe Theatre, several restaurants, and other smaller meeting centers, are popular venues for events, premieres, conferences, and parties.
Other nearby hotels include The Garland in Studio City. It’s named after actress Beverly Garland from My Three Sons and Best Western Plus Media Centre & Suites in Burbank.
Going to CityWalk is like being stoned without taking drugs
It’s always fun and was particularly bright and cheery during the holidays when I was there. While the East Coast was frozen from the Bomb Cyclone I walked City Walk under a sunny and glorious sky.
Take in a movie while you’re there
You can’t beat the Universal CityWalk AMC Theater for the best sound, projection, and comfort. It was recently redesigned with black walls, speakers, and super comfortable reclining 32” black seats to minimize any light interference. The theater is equipped with Dolby ATMOS immersive surround sound, and a Christie RGB later projection and Christie Vive Audio. There are 40 speakers in each theater.
Do you want the Hollywood experience without the crazy frenzy of Hollywood Blvd? Then, Universal CityWalk Hollywood is a perfect place to visit, eat, and play if you’re in LA.
