When asked to do a Redken Cerafill review of their thinning hair solutions products I was excited because I’ve been dropping hair all over the place for the last several years. I don’t have visible thin patches, but my hairbrush was starting to look like a kitty cat after each brushing. In fact; I actually stopped blow drying my hair because my hair would end up stuck all over the walls of my bathroom. My hair is long and I like it that way, but I want it to stay on my head and not end up clogging the vacuum.
Do you have thinning hair?
We all know that many men end up with bald spots, but thinning hair is also a common occurrence in women over 50. After menopause, about 40 percent of women experience hair loss. Thinning hair in women is generally a result of low levels of hormones after menopause, but can also be caused by genetics, stress, thyroid imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, crash diets, illness, and medications.
Luckily, there is a line of hair products that will help keep your hair on your head and off the floor. Redken’s Cerafill thinning hair solutions will thicken your hair almost instantly, and help it regrow after a period of time.
My stylist recommended that I use Redken products, so I was excited to try the Cerafill line for thinning hair. I have fine hair and was sent Cerafill Defy because it’s formulated for normal to thin hair. You can also use “Retaliate” if you have advanced thinning hair issues. Both are designed to be used for women and men.
I received a box with one bottle each of Cerafill Defy shampoo and conditioner, Maximize Dense FX thickening treatment, and Maximize Texture Effect. I’ve used all four products since early June and have seen a dramatic difference in the thickness and strength of my hair. Because my hair tends to be on the dry side as a result of having it colored, I also use a leave-in conditioner. Cerafill works well with other hair products.
Cerafill Defy contains Zinc PCA – to help remove DHT, a male sex hormone that causes hair loss. We all have female and male hormones inside our bodies. It also contains Ceramides to strengthen hair, and SP-94 to nourish the scalp. Dense FX contains Filoxane that works on the surface of each strand to thicken hair. It’s been shown to increase the diameter of each strand by about 9%. Redken Cerafill products have been endorsed by Dermatologist Dr. Nicole Rogers, who is board certified and a leading hair transplantation surgeon.
A few years back, I took a workshop with the topic “understanding men.” I learned that the number one feature men are attracted to in women is shiny hair. Shiny hair, to a man’s primitive brain, is a sign of fertility.
Women over 50 are obviously past the point of having children, but there’s no reason you have to experience hair loss or look like you have “unfertile” hair. LOL, When your hair is healthy, you feel better about yourself. It’s hard to compete with a 20-year-old model swishing her long and lush hair on a hair commercial, but if you use Redken Cerafill thinning hair products, along with eating nourishing food, you’ll still be hard to resist.

My Personal Experience with Redken Cerafill Thinning Hair Solutions – Pros and Cons
I will flat out tell you that I’m a bumbler when it comes to taking care of my hair. I typically wash, condition and then let it air dry naturally. Forget about coloring my own hair, because I always make a mess. When my daughter was a little girl, I was the only mom who couldn’t French Braid my kid’s hair. I prefer products that are simple and easy to use.
Redken Cerafill shampoo and conditioner both have a pleasant and fresh aroma and don’t require you do anything out of the ordinary. Wash, condition, rinse and then dry it slightly with a towel.
Dense FX comes in a bottle with a pump that squirts. Apply it while your hair is still damp. The instructions say to section your hair and apply. Not being very coordinated with creating “sections,” I just squirt a small amount of the solution in different spots on the top of my head and then rub it in. To make sure it is evenly spread I run a comb through my hair.
Maximize Texture Effect comes in an aerosol can. It’s a hair and scalp refresher. You apply it to dry hair every day. I have to admit I’m not an aerosol or hairspray kind of person but found that it definitely adds a nice thick texture to my hair. If you’re sensitive to aerosol, then you may want to skip this step.
If I were to add any constructive criticism to the product line at all, it would be to make the instructions a little easier to read for those of us over 50. I had to use my reading glasses because the print is so tiny.
I’m very pleased with the results I received from using the Redken Cerafill product line. My hair looks and feels great for a 60ish Baby Boomer Broad. If you have thinning hair, I recommend that you give it a try.

Thanks for your article. I am now 59. In 2005, I got breast cancer. It was estrogen-positive, which meant that I had to deplete as much estrogen out of my body as possible. I am not supposed to take any HRT involving estrogen. My hair grew back remarkably well, but has thinned over the decade. And I could pull out strands during brushing, and felt some strands hit my body too. So your article is very encouraging! I just hope it doesn’t cause build up on my hair, since it says hair is coated with elements that plump up the thickness. I think I will try it. Thank you! You seem like a very nice person and fellow-boomer. Thanks, Susan
Hi Susan,
Sorry to respond so late but I was on a cruise ship with limited Internet.Sorry to hear about what you had to go through with your breast cancer treatment. I found that the Cerafill works very well for me. I have fine hair and understand your concern with adding build up. The products are actually very light and make my hair feel full. I hope you’ll give it a try and let me know what you think. Thanks so much for writing. Yours, Rebecca
Can it be used if I color my hair
Hi Melinda,
Yes, you can definitely use it if you color your hair. It’s made to be compatible. I have color treated hair as well.
