I went to a midlife women’s conference over the weekend in Redondo Beach, California called Fierce Con 2018. It was an offshoot of a Facebook Group I recently joined called Forever Fierce Revolution. I learned about it at the last minute when I met with my online friend Jacynth Bassett for tea while she was visiting Los Angeles from London. She has a fabulous online clothing store for mature women called The Bias Cut and was one of the sponsors of the event.
Forever Fierce – Midlife women with a passion for life
The ladies in our Forever Fierce Revolution group, led by Catherine Grace O’Connell are not only hip and insanely stylish but also some of the most giving and friendly I’ve ever met. Their motto is “No mean girls.” Even though many live in the Los Angeles area, some come from all over the globe. One woman flew all the way from New Zealand just to be at the conference for the weekend.
A needed getaway when life throws you lemons
I’ve been dealing with some major challenges lately. The worst is that my Sig Other was diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer, a horrible diagnosis. After numerous doctor appointments and hospital stays, including myself in the ER for stomach problems (turns out I’m fine) I was ready for some “girlfriend” support.
Fierce Con 2018 highlights
I chose not to stay at the hotel because I wasn’t sure I could commit considering the circumstances, so I drove in Friday night and again on Saturday for the main events. I had to miss out on their lovely Sunday brunch because things came up at home I had to deal with.
When I arrived at Fierce Con, I was immediately met with hugs from women I had never met in person. It made me feel so welcome. As much as I love blogging, it can be isolating sometimes. Bloggers tend to make friends online but don’t always get out enough to network in person. There were a couple friends I knew from another midlife Facebook group who flew in, so it was fun seeing them in the flesh.
We had a Gala and buffet dinner the first night. The room was beautifully decorated by a woman who worked at the studios with huge paper flowers and delightful splashes of color. A DJ was playing music and a woman I’d just met pulled me on to the dance floor to boogie for a while. It was fun!
Meditation and speakers
We started out Saturday morning meditating with Davidji, who is the author of the Nautilus Gold Medal book Sacred Powers andAmazon Best Seller Secrets of Meditation. He was the lead educator at The Chopra Center for 10 years where he has trained over 200,000 people to meditate and has certified over 1,000 meditation teachers. Afterward, he spoke to our group about meditation and told us about his own reinvention from Wall Street investor to meditation master.
There were two Forever Fierce panels made up of incredible women who have experienced all sorts of obstacles in their lives. They’ve reinvented themselves, started businesses, and are now thriving in midlife. It was inspiring to listen to all of them.
The shoes – it was all about the shoes
Many of the women who attended are fashion bloggers and you could tell by their outfits and shoes they didn’t subscribe to the notion that midlife is frumpy. It’s anything but. I don’t think I’ve seen so many to-die-for shoes in one room. One of the sponsors was a 30-year old young woman who started her own shoe company called Jaclyn Jones USA. Her handcrafted shoes are not only unique and high-style but also comfortable because she adds an extra cushion. You can wear them, look amazing, and not have to soak your feet after wearing them.
I was also impressed by the number of women who had stunning gray hair. It almost made me want to stop dying mine!
Other Fierce Con 2018 sponsors you want to know about
Since just about everyone at the conference was midlife and beyond, the sponsors of the event were mostly companies that cater to mature women. I can’t list them all but here are a few you should definitely take a look at.
Boostwr – Loungerie (not lingerie) for full-chested girls and women with trim frames. You won’t have to worry about having your boobs drop to your knees because their loungewear has built-in support without constraint/compression and is super soft.
Studio 10 – a makeup line dedicated to mature skin. They promote Pro-Aging and recognize that less is more when it comes to helping mature skin glow. I’m totally in love with the lipstick that came in my swag bag. All their shades are natural, attractive, and luminous.
Madison Reed – This has been my favorite online shopping site for non-toxic hair color for a long time. Their shades are stunning and all their products contain safe ingredients that last and look gorgeous. If you dye your own hair, you have to visit their site. I wrote a review about them here.
Saranghae Korean Skincare – Saranghae’s active ingredients are derived from rare and powerful botanicals that grow in nutrient-rich volcanic soil on the island of Jeju, South Korea. They were the keynote speakers at the brunch.
