If you’re over 50, you’ve probably encountered toxic people who were mean, cruel, and creepy. They may have caused you to lose your self-esteem, hindered your progress in achieving your goals or cast a cloak of ugliness around you. The divide over political arena is a perfect example. I know, I didn’t want to bring it up, but for many of us, our lives and friendships will never be the same.
I’ve spewed, vomited, regurgitated and spilled my guts over it but it isn’t typical of me. As one of my Facebook friends said, “Why are you wasting your energy on this? You’re a positive person. Stop it!”
I think that’s why it was hard on me. I’ve always strived to be positive, but hateful people are having a field day right now and it’s like a knife plunging deep into my soul. Right after the election at a networking meeting, a laughter coach got up and attempted to make us chuckle. A few women went along with it, but most just sat there pitifully trying to turn up their lips. Never ask a person who is sad to SMILE. It just makes them sadder.
The upside is, I cleaned out many of the toxic people I had too easily befriended on Facebook and who clearly didn’t share my sensibilities. They were ticking time bombs of exploding venom and their pent-up fear caused them to attack, blame and demonize. One was a dog walker who had always seemed to be a nice person. I don’t know about her dogs, but after listening to her rant, I was ready to sink my teeth into her.
That said, there’s a difference between someone who argues intelligently and thoughtfully and a person who is so vile you want to punch them in the face.
A key to finding happiness and harmony in your life over 50 is to rid yourself of annoying toxic people and hang out with those who make you feel loved and empowered. Doing this will set you free. It’s not always easy and may put you in a stressful position for the short term, but you’ll be better off in the long-run if you do.
Release toxic people from your life and find your tribe
Toxic people are those who purposely make you anxious, uncertain, and angry. Some may even live with you and you wonder how you got yourself into such an uncomfortable situation. A tribe is a group of like-minded people who work together in a supportive and constructive way. Unlike cult members, they’re free to express their own ideas, respect each other’s views, and live together in relative peace. With a tribe, you can get things done, change the world, and reduce your stress.
Do good in the world
Our best revenge when the world is insane is to “fight with light” and strive to make the world and our own environment a better place.
Turn a negative into a positive by taking up a cause or simply do a good deed each day. The impact of each individual may be small but together we are powerful. You will be happier in your own life and that will spread more light into the world. The answer my friends is blowing in the wind and maybe blowing a few toxic people into the ether.
