A dental emergency can happen to you at any time, especially if you’re over 50. But are you prepared? Do you know if you’re covered if you break a tooth, lose an implant, or need a root canal?
We all know that healthcare insurance plans are confusing and can be expensive, depending on qualifications. Many Baby Boomers do not have adequate dental insurance, or it has restrictions for major procedures. If you’re over 65 and on Medicare, it’s especially important to have supplemental insurance.
Our teeth soften as we age and require more frequent cleanings and occasional deep cleanings to prevent health-threatening gum disease. If you don’t care for them for properly, you may lose them altogether. Do you remember watching Martha Rae’s denture glue commercials when you were younger? They made me terrified that my teeth would fall out when I got old. So far, they’re still intact, but I can’t help visualizing my dad pulling out his teeth and dropping them into a glass of water before he went to bed.
A dental emergency can be costly if you aren’t covered
Spirit Dental and Vision Insurance offers a comprehensive plan to help keep your teeth healthy and covered when you have an occasional dental emergency. It has a $100 one-time deductible, and then a monthly premium. There’s no age limit, no waiting period for full coverage, you are guaranteed acceptance, will receive dental implant coverage, and will be eligible for three cleanings per year. It also gives you coverage for major procedures depending on the plan you choose. Once you’re signed up, you get a 30-day guarantee. You will also receive up to $5,000 annual maximum per person benefits to pay for procedures such as a bridge, crowns, implant, root canal or another major service.
Spirit Dental’s carrier is Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. It’s been around since the 1880s, is rated A+ on Standard and Poor’s, and is an A.M. Best Company. They’re also members of the Smile Network, that provide free and life-changing surgeries to children born with cleft lips and palates in third world countries.
Choice vs Network Plans
You get to choose a plan that works best for you. The Spirit Choice plan is a fee-for-service plan. It’s perfect if you want to be able to use the dentist of your choice rather than those approved by the network. It covers approximately 50-100% of traditional expenses and 100% of all preventative care costs, which include cleanings and checkups. Major procedures are covered at 25% of the cost.
If you choose the Network Plan you’ll get more savings, but you can only use dentists that are in the network. The Ameritas network includes 111,500 providers within the U.S. The plan for major procedures like implants are paid to 50% of the cost.
Both plans start immediately after payment is processed (up to 5 business days) and then you can take advantage of full benefits.
