Needless to say- despite all the walking I was doing every day – and the nutritious food I was eating – my Baby Boomer body was getting blubbery. Like Baby Beluga blubbery. Something had to change. It was getting to the point that stepping on a scale was a major trauma. Enter Defy Aging ™ Solutions, a new and scientific over 40 fitness facility in Woodland Hills, California that offers “Clinical Concierge Fitness™.” They asked me to be a Beta tester for their FastStart program before they officially open in January. I jumped at the chance.
Defy Aging ™ Solutions isn’t your typical workout studio with a big room and scary mirrors
There’s a large electronic board on the back wall of the workout room that’s used for physical and mental games. Also neatly arranged are an array of mats, balls, weights, noodles, straps, cones, and other odd objects. Participants receive a 30- minute series of exercises that includes cardio, strength training, balance, and mental agility. Each workout is different so your body doesn’t get used to the same routine over and over. That’s what was happening to me. Even though I was walking up and down hills every day and getting plenty of cardio, my body and metabolism hit a stubborn plateau.
Before I started the 21-day beta test FastStart 5 days a week, I came in to be weighed, measured, and tested. My trainer, Annora, took my blood pressure and gave me a heart monitor to wear around my chest. She took photos of me in various positions (like squats) and uploaded them into a computer program. They diagrammed the alignment of my body and determined my body fat ratio. It wasn’t a pretty thing to see. She also tested me for balance, which is critically important as we age because a bad fall can screw you up big time. My information was entered and I received a print out to take home.
When I arrived for my first workout and strapped on the heart monitor I saw my heart rate and stats pop up on a large TV screen in the workout room. I could see my intensity levels go up and down as I exercised. We started each day of the beta test with a quick warm-up, then played a game with the electronic board. We would either punch it, kick it, throw balls at it, or sometimes try to follow the alphabet. Then, we’d try to beat our previous score.
We also did a circuit of exercises that worked with different parts of our bodies each time. One day would be upper arms, another lower body, etc. After it was over, Annora cooled us down. It was intriguing to watch how each participant varied in intensity on the screen.
After my 21-day beta test was completed, I signed up as a member and am now coming in 3 times a week. Annora retested me and my results showed major improvements. I’m also proud to say I lost 7 pounds in three weeks. I like that the program is diversified and that we’re constantly being monitored. Too many people over 50 start exercise programs and end up hurting themselves or worse.
That’s not to say the workout hasn’t been challenging. However, we each work at our own pace, and no one’s forced to keep up if they can’t. It’s interesting how each of our metabolisms responds differently to certain types of exercises. For instance, because I was doing cardio before starting the program, my intensity level is lower than those who hadn’t been exercising before. I don’t burn as many calories even though I’m working harder.
Wearing a fitness tracking device has helped me lose weight
I purchased a fitness tracking device and have been wearing it every day because it’s helped shed pounds in the past. It’s synced to my phone through an app. Besides tracking my steps, it allows me to log all the meals I eat each day.
Garmin Vivo fitness trackers are sleek looking and you can wear them on your wrist like a watch. They display your steps, distance, calories, heart rate, floors climbed, and activity intensity. They connect to your smartphone using the app Garmin Connect, and you can become a part of their fitness community. My son loves his device because he can connect and compete with his friends.
Dealing with Muscle Aches Before and After Exercise
Another helpful piece of exercise equipment I purchased and that we use at Defy Aging ™ Solutions is a foam roller. The OPTP LoRox foam roller was designed by Lauren Roxburgh who is a fascia and alignment expert.
Do you have aching muscles? If you do, you can roll the aches away using the roller. I’ve been suffering from extreme neck and shoulder pain because I sit at my computer for too long. Several videos on YouTube show you in detail how to roll out your muscles correctly. Go to YouTube and enter “foam roller exercises” in the search box. You can also add to what specific body part is aching.
Emotional eating plays a major role in holding on to stubborn weight
Snacking has been my main downfall because I’m a die-hard foodie. Even though I only eat “real” food and avoid junk, I’m prone to random nibbling. The calories from those extra whole-grain crackers with cheese add up fast and ends up on my belly. But the real culprit is stress, which is hard to avoid once you’ve experienced life’s endless challenges. Stress builds up excess cortisol, the adrenal hormone that packs on belly fat. It’s especially dangerous when you’re over 40 because it puts a strain on your heart and can kill you. Tracking my food input on using my fitness app keeps me from extra trips to the refrigerator and makes weight loss remarkably easy.
How can you defy aging and lose stubborn fat every day?
The Defy Aging ™ Solutions studio is located in Woodland Hills, California, and they plan to open more studios in the next few years. But what can you do if you don’t live in Los Angeles?
It’s important to always diversify your exercise. Don’t do the same routine every day. Mix it up so your body doesn’t get used to it and plateau.
All movement counts
That’s why a fitness tracker is helpful. Even if you mainly walk, like I was doing, change up your intensity in bursts. Walk easily for 1 minute and then faster for another minute. Add strength training. Bounce balls against a wall and catch them. Turn on Pandora, get up from your computer, and dance to disco music. Hula Hoop. Ride a bike. Swim. Kayak. Clean the house. Garden.
