The holidays are coming up so fast it seems like it was just New Years. Los Angeles is dressing up in sparkles to herald in the season. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is especially glittery this time of year. I went to their 30th-Holiday Lighting Celebration to see it in all its splendor. It was a rainy evening, which is rare and needed in Southern California these days – good for the Earth, but not so good for a lighting celebration. It didn’t matter, though. We had fun anyway and the rain just made it sparkle more.
Rodeo Drive is the premier shopping mecca of Los Angeles. High-end shops line the”Golden Triangle” directly across from the majestic Beverly Wilshire hotel. It’s spectacularly lit for the holidays and is a glamorous venue to wander around in if you’re in a shopping mood. Gucci, Chanel, Bvlgari, Burberry, Cartier, Dior, and Valentino are just a few of the establishments where celebrities and the affluent get together to eat and be seen.

We were treated to the “Taste of the Village” with samples of the area’s most decadent treats. Sprinkles Cupcakes, Bouchon Bakery, Teuscher Chocolates, Beverly Hills Beignet, and Coral Tree Caféwere on hand to pass out treats.
Mary Hart, the former host of Entertainment Tonight, hosted the entertainment that included a performance of holiday songs by Broadway star Megan Hilty. You may remember her as “Ivy” in the TV series Smash. (which I miss dearly) It was pouring by the time the show started, but we all sat under our umbrellas enjoying the performances and the fireworks display.
My umbrella was an epic fail because it fell apart as soon as I opened it. I looked ridiculous walking around Rodeo Drive with it flopping on the sides. I’m guessing it must have atrophied from the drought. When I got back home I was damp and craving a stiff one.
The holiday lighting celebration and show also kicked off a new community initiative called Rodeo Gives Back. Guests brought coats that were given to the Salvation Army and the organizers made a donation to The Maple Counseling Center. It provides low-cost mental health services to those in need and train counselors and interns. $10,000 was also donated in Megan Hilty’s name to a cancer center after her performance.
Rodeo Drive Holiday Activities
Two Rodeo Drive will be festive with holiday music and carolers. We enjoyed some of the carolers and street performers on opening night and they were wonderful.
Many iconic Beverly Hills hotels will be dressed up for the holidays during the entire month of December. Stop in for a seasonal cocktail and to view the decorations. They include:
- Beverly Hills Hotel & Bungalows
- Beverly Wilshire Beverly Hills (A Four Seasons Hotel)
- The Beverly Hilton
- Viceroy L’Ermitage Beverly Hills
- Montage Beverly Hills
- The Peninsula Beverly Hills
I loved my holiday-inspired” champagne at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. It had a spicy cinnamon stick in it.
Have a Happy Holiday season and if you’re in Beverly Hills, make sure to shop Rodeo Drive and enjoy the holiday magic.
